Meta Platforms has announced plans to improve user experience by using its AI technology, already used by over 1 billion users monthly. The company is keen on personalizing the online experience across its platforms, which include Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, based on user interactions with its AI tools. This initiative is set to roll out on December 16, 2025, with notifications about the upcoming changes starting next week through emails and alerts.
The integration of AI into Meta’s recommendation systems aims to refine how users engage with content. Historically, user interactions have influenced feed recommendations, including ads and posts. Now, Meta intends to add AI interactions as a new layer of personalization. For example, if a user engages in a conversation with Meta AI about hiking, the platform could begin suggesting related content, such as posts featuring hiking trails or advertisements for outdoor gear. This change seeks to bolster the relevance of the content users encounter while reducing exposure to material that doesn’t align with their interests.
Users will retain a significant degree of control over their experience. Meta offers tools like Ads Preferences and feed controls that allow individuals to customize the type of content they receive. Users can also select whether to communicate with AI through voice or text. In scenarios where voice interaction is employed, an indicator light will confirm when the microphone is activated. Importantly, the company asserts that it will only use microphone data with explicit user consent and while engaging with features requiring such functionality.
Furthermore, conversations with Meta AI will remain poignant in that sensitive topics—such as political beliefs, health matters, or personal identity—will not influence ad targeting. Insights drawn from user interactions with AI will be aggregated across the various Meta platforms as long as the respective accounts are linked through the Accounts Center. Thus, if a user does not integrate their WhatsApp account, interactions conducted through WhatsApp will not affect personalization in other Meta services.
As Meta embarks on implementing these changes, it emphasizes its commitment to providing users with tailored experiences. The company looks to gradually expand this enhanced personalization capability across more regions following the December rollout, with users encouraged to consult the company’s Privacy Center for further details on privacy practices and policies.
