    OpenAI and PayPal have announced a collaboration to implement the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) within ChatGPT, a move expected to improve payment processing and commerce capabilities on the platform. This partnership aims to connect consumers directly to PayPal’s extensive network of tens of millions of merchants, facilitating easier access to beloved brands for users of ChatGPT.

    According to Alex Chriss, the President and CEO of PayPal, this integration will allow the millions of people who rely on ChatGPT for various tasks, including shopping, to seamlessly transition from chatting to checking out with just a few taps. The collaboration will incorporate PayPal’s diverse wallet options during the Instant Checkout process, offering users the ability to choose from multiple funding sources, including bank accounts, balances, and credit cards. Consumers will also benefit from PayPal’s buyer and seller protections, as well as post-purchase features like tracking and dispute resolution.

    Additionally, PayPal intends to leverage the delegated payments API to streamline card payment processes associated with OpenAI’s Instant Checkout. By 2026, the ACP will enable this product catalogs of small and major retail businesses across various sectors—including apparel, beauty, home improvement, and electronics—to be integrated into ChatGPT, making countless items available for users to discover and purchase. PayPal will oversee backend operations, such as merchant routing and payment validation, simplifying the integration for businesses that choose to participate.

    This partnership marks an expansion of PayPal’s AI initiatives with OpenAI, which also includes granting ChatGPT Enterprise access to over 24,000 employees and using OpenAI’s APIs to improve product development and customer experience. PayPal is encouraging existing and potential merchants to join the new commerce platform through a dedicated sign-up link.

    As PayPal and OpenAI continue to innovate in the digital commerce space, this collaboration aims to redefine the shopping experience for millions of consumers worldwide.
