A new report from OpenAI examines how artificial intelligence is reshaping workplace dynamics, revealing both promising advancements and tempered expectations for productivity boosts. Drawing from usage data of over one million business clients and insights from a survey involving 9,000 employees across roughly 100 companies, the analysis highlights growing reliance on AI tools like ChatGPT in corporate environments.
The study indicates that 75 percent of respondents credit AI with enhancing either the pace or the standard of their work results. Similarly, three-quarters of participants noted that the technology enables them to tackle assignments they once found impossible. Yet, despite these positive reports, the overall time savings remain modest, with ChatGPT Enterprise subscribers averaging just 40 to 60 minutes freed up each active workday, according to the document.
Adoption trends point to rapid expansion. Over the last year, the volume of weekly interactions with ChatGPT Enterprise has surged nearly eightfold, while the deployment of tailored workflows, including custom versions of the tool, has multiplied by 19. Businesses are also submitting more intricate queries, evidenced by a more than 320-fold rise in the use of advanced reasoning features.
Specific applications show clear benefits, such as accelerating IT support, developing marketing initiatives and refining software code. However, these efficiencies do not translate into dramatic daily transformations for most users, capping gains at about an hour.
A notable disparity emerges between intensive AI adopters and typical employees. Those in the top five percent of usage intensity generate around six times as many messages as their peers and report reclaiming more than 10 hours weekly, equivalent to about two hours per day. These power users integrate AI deeply into their routines, treating it as a core collaborator rather than a sporadic aid.
OpenAI presents the findings as a current overview of corporate AI integration, emphasizing that greater impacts may arise from reengineering business processes to better leverage the technology. For the average worker, AI serves as a helpful supplement, streamlining operations and reducing drudgery without upending daily workflows entirely. The report raises questions about whether these limited returns signal the technology’s boundaries or the start of more substantial shifts ahead.
