Adobe has rolled out significant enhancements to its Firefly AI tool, introducing a sophisticated video editing interface that allows for targeted modifications via text prompts. This update also integrates external AI models from Black Forest Labs and Topaz Labs, expanding options for both image and video creation within the platform.
Previously limited to generating entire videos from scratch based on prompts, Firefly now enables users to refine specific aspects of existing footage. Creators can describe changes to visual elements, adjust color schemes, or alter camera perspectives using simple instructions. A fresh timeline interface further simplifies the process, offering controls for tweaking individual frames, audio tracks, and additional video properties.
The video editor entered private beta last October, as Adobe first revealed in an early preview. It’s now accessible to everyone using the service.
Powered by Runway’s Aleph technology, the editor responds to detailed directives, such as transforming a clear sky into a cloudy one while reducing overall contrast, or subtly magnifying the focus on a central figure.
Adobe’s proprietary Firefly Video model introduces more advanced capabilities, where users can supply an initial image frame alongside a sample clip demonstrating desired camera movement, prompting the system to mirror that motion in their project. For higher quality output, the integration of Topaz Labs’ Astra model permits upscaling footage to 1080p or 4K resolutions. Meanwhile, Black Forest Labs’ FLUX.2 arrives as a new option for image generation, immediately usable across Firefly platforms, with Adobe Express users gaining access starting in January. The update also brings collaborative boards to facilitate team-based workflows.
In a competitive landscape where rivals frequently unveil cutting-edge generation tools, Adobe aims to boost user retention through these Firefly improvements. To sweeten the deal, subscribers on Firefly Pro, Firefly Premium, and the 7,000- or 50,000-credit tiers will enjoy unlimited access to all image models plus the Firefly Video Model until January 15.
This year alone, Adobe has aggressively expanded Firefly’s ecosystem. It kicked off with subscription tiers for varied generation volumes in February, followed by a revamped web application in April and dedicated mobile versions later on. The platform now routinely incorporates third-party models to stay ahead.
