Spotify is giving music fans a fresh way to curate their listening experience with the launch of Prompted Playlists, a feature that turns casual descriptions into tailored music collections. Instead of relying solely on predefined algorithms, users can now type out their exact mood, memory, or vibe in plain language, and the service will craft a playlist drawing from personal history and the latest music trends. This approach shifts discovery from passive recommendation to active collaboration, where listeners dictate the terms and Spotify handles the heavy lifting.
The idea stems from a simpler desire: let people specify precisely what they want to hear. Early testers in New Zealand, where the beta kicked off for Premium subscribers in December 2025, wasted no time experimenting. Some requested tracks evoking winter nights while skipping recent overplays, others sought extended instrumental electronica for focus sessions, or blends featuring artists buzzing in pop culture. Now, the feature expands to Premium users in the United States and Canada, rolling out gradually through the end of the month.
To get started, open the Spotify app, navigate to the Create section, and choose Prompted Playlist. Enter a prompt like upbeat indie tracks spiked with songs from reality TV that match your style, or cozy folk tunes paired with rising global singer-songwriter gems. The system pulls in current charts, cultural shifts, and your complete listening archive to build something uniquely suited. Songs come with brief notes explaining their fit, and users can tweak the prompt on the fly, regenerate entirely, or schedule automatic updates daily or weekly for ongoing freshness. For those needing a nudge, an Ideas button offers starter suggestions.
Sulinna Ong, Spotify’s Global Head of Editorial, highlighted the allure. Listeners often enjoy ready-made playlists but hesitate to build their own from nothing, she noted. Prompted Playlists lowers that barrier by starting with natural language ideas, creating results that feel authentically personal.
The Home screen may showcase curated example prompts from Spotify’s editors, blending fun concepts into adaptable ideas. For more on these, check out Spotify’s example prompts. Sharing is simple too, with the playlist adapting to friends’ tastes upon receipt, perhaps reviving 2000s nostalgia infused with era-defining media hits.
As the beta progresses, Spotify plans refinements based on user input, including potential changes and temporary limits to manage demand. The company looks forward to the inventive prompts that will emerge as more people dive in. For details on the initial announcement, visit Spotify’s newsroom.
