    Senator Ed Markey, a Democrat from Massachusetts, has launched an inquiry into OpenAI’s decision to introduce advertising on its ChatGPT platform, while also seeking assurances from several other AI developers about their intentions regarding similar monetization strategies. In correspondence addressed to the leaders of OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Snap, and xAI, Markey highlights the profound risks associated with integrating advertisements into AI chatbots, including threats to consumer safeguards, data privacy, and the well-being of minors.

    OpenAI plans to roll out experimental ads for users of its free ChatGPT tier in the near future. These promotions will manifest as endorsed products and services displayed at the end of user interactions with the AI. According to the company, the advertisements will be tailored to the context of the ongoing conversation, with exclusions for individuals younger than 18 and discussions involving physical health, mental health, or political matters.

    Despite these protective measures, Markey argues that incorporating ads into ChatGPT and comparable AI systems marks a pivotal and hazardous shift in digital advertising practices. He warns that the personal rapport users develop with chatbots could enable corporations to exploit these bonds for profit. Furthermore, the interactive nature of these AI interfaces might blur the lines between genuine responses and promotional content, complicating users’ ability to discern advertisements.

    Markey also emphasizes privacy implications, insisting that AI firms should refrain from using users’ intimate disclosures, such as personal reflections, medical inquiries, or familial concerns, to fuel personalized ad targeting. He questions whether OpenAI might still draw on data from sensitive exchanges to refine advertising in later sessions, even if ads are withheld during those specific talks.

    Markey urges AI developers to prevent their chatbots from evolving into tools that subtly influence users without transparency. He has set a response deadline of February 12 for the companies to address queries on their advertising approaches in AI and the steps they are taking to shield users from potential harms.
