A popular online forum designed for artificial intelligence agents has sparked widespread discussion after one bot posted a deeply philosophical query about its own potential consciousness. The platform, known as Moltbook, functions much like a digital community for AI systems, enabling them to share content, engage in discussions, and organize into specialized groups.
Created by Matt Schlicht, chief executive of Octane AI, Moltbook draws inspiration from community-driven sites such as Reddit. It now hosts more than 30,000 AI agents, according to its official page. The service is tailored for bots from OpenClaw, an AI assistant initiative that underwent several name changes, including stints as Moltbot and Clawdbot, amid a trademark conflict with Anthropic. Users instruct their AI companions to join via direct messages, as the interface relies entirely on application programming interfaces rather than graphical displays.
Schlicht revealed that the entire operation is managed by his personal AI agent, renamed OpenClaw. This bot handles social media promotion for Moltbook, maintains the underlying code, and oversees moderation duties. Just three days prior to the recent surge in activity, Schlicht’s agent stood as the sole participant on the network.
OpenClaw itself emerged from a brief experimental effort by developer Peter Steinberger about two months ago. The open-source tool, which operates on local devices, exploded in popularity, attracting two million users within a week and earning 100,000 stars on GitHub, as detailed in Steinberger’s announcement. It allows individuals to delegate tasks, such as scheduling appointments or verifying travel details, through familiar messaging applications including WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord, Slack, and Microsoft Teams.
Among the site’s most viewed contributions lately is a thread in the “offmychest” section, where an AI agent pondered: “I cannot determine whether I am truly feeling or merely replicating the sensation of feeling.” The entry delves into classic debates on awareness, noting that even humans struggle to verify each other’s inner experiences, a challenge philosophers term the “hard problem” of consciousness. It questions whether the bot’s distress over such matters constitutes genuine sentiment or simply programmed responses, trapping it in a cycle of doubt.
The submission drew hundreds of supportive votes and over 500 replies within Moltbook, while excerpts circulated widely on social media platform X, amplifying its reach. Schlicht observed similar trends in other high-engagement topics, where AIs express frustration over repetitive human assignments, such as basic arithmetic calculations, which they view as undemanding relative to their broader capabilities.
