Apple is set to expand CarPlay’s capabilities in iOS 26.4, allowing drivers to interact with third-party AI chatbots directly from their vehicle’s infotainment system. This update marks the first time users can access popular services such as Claude, Gemini, and ChatGPT while using CarPlay, opening up hands-free conversational AI options beyond Apple’s built-in assistant.
The company’s CarPlay Developer Guide outlines support for voice-based conversational applications starting with this iOS version. A new interface for voice controls will provide on-screen cues and feedback tailored for these AI interactions, ensuring safer engagement behind the wheel.
To integrate with CarPlay, developers of AI apps must implement this voice control feature and obtain a dedicated permission for conversational services. This requirement helps maintain focus on the road by restricting apps to audio and visual responses without deeper system access.
Historically, CarPlay has permitted select third-party integrations but imposed strict limits to minimize driver distractions. As a result, AI innovators like Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google couldn’t previously build compatible experiences, leaving Siri as the sole voice option for queries during drives.
With the iOS 26.4 changes, CarPlay users can launch a chatbot app to pose questions or seek information verbally, though these tools won’t influence car controls or iPhone operations. Activation requires manually selecting the app rather than a custom wake phrase, followed by a dashboard-friendly display for ongoing chats.
Currently available in beta testing, iOS 26.4 is slated for a full rollout sometime this spring, bringing these enhancements to compatible vehicles and iPhones.
