Microsoft on Tuesday reaffirmed the robustness of its long-standing partnership with OpenAI, emphasizing that recent announcements from the AI developer regarding new funding and collaborations do not alter the terms of their alliance.
The companies have collaborated since 2019 to promote responsible artificial intelligence development and widen its availability. What started as a joint research effort has evolved into a pivotal technology alliance, built on trust, technical synergy, and a dedication to ongoing innovation.
In a statement, Microsoft clarified that OpenAI’s latest disclosures fit squarely within the framework of their existing agreement, unchanged from details outlined in a joint blog post from October 2025 titled The Next Chapter of the Microsoft-OpenAI Partnership.
The partnership continues to thrive at its core. Microsoft and OpenAI maintain close cooperation in areas such as research, engineering, and product creation, drawing on years of joint achievements.
Intellectual property arrangements remain intact, with Microsoft holding exclusive rights and access to OpenAI’s models and technologies. The companies’ deal has always allowed for OpenAI to form ties with others, such as its recent collaboration with Amazon, which Microsoft welcomes as an opportunity for further advancements.
Commercial terms and revenue-sharing mechanisms are unaltered. The current setup includes provisions for distributing revenues from OpenAI’s partnerships with alternative cloud services.
Microsoft’s Azure platform stays the sole provider for stateless application programming interfaces that deliver access to OpenAI’s models and intellectual property. These services are available for purchase either through Microsoft or OpenAI directly, offering users Azure’s worldwide network, robust security, and enterprise-level features. Even API usage stemming from OpenAI’s work with third parties, including Amazon, will run on Azure infrastructure.
OpenAI’s core offerings, including its advanced Frontier models, will persist in being hosted on Azure.
Definitions and procedures related to artificial general intelligence, or AGI, under their contract are unchanged.
The alliance facilitates OpenAI’s expansion by permitting it to secure extra computing resources from other sources, such as ambitious projects like Stargate, while upholding their collaborative ties.
From the outset, the partnership was structured to allow both firms to explore separate ventures alongside their joint efforts, a balance they continue to strike.
Microsoft expressed its steadfast dedication to the collaboration and the common goal that united them, vowing to partner in creating effective AI solutions, fostering ethical progress, and extending AI’s advantages to individuals and businesses globally.
