Google is enhancing the functionality of its AI assistant, Gemini, by integrating it more closely with Chrome. A new feature dubbed “Select from screen” is now being rolled out, enabling users to highlight specific text or images from a webpage and send them directly to Gemini. This development aims to make interactions with the AI more contextual and intuitive.
Accessible through Chrome’s “+” menu, the feature operates similarly to a screenshot tool. Users can directly select any visible text or image in their browser tab, which is then automatically linked to a Gemini request. This capability allows individuals to focus on specific content they want assistance with, eliminating the need to manually describe what they’re viewing online.
This update is being introduced as part of Chrome version 149. However, some users might need to restart their browsers for the feature to appear. This move supports Google’s broader strategy to transform Gemini from a standalone chatbot into a proactive assistant this is aware of users’ current activities.
Additionally, Google made headlines by announcing an important upgrade to Gemini on the same day. Developers can now leverage the capabilities of Gemini 3.5 Flash, which allows AI agents to see, reason, and interact across various applications, including web browsers and mobile apps. Google claims this new integration enhances the efficiency of long-term tasks such as software testing and complex enterprise workflows.
This enhancement significantly shifts the paradigm of how users might interact with AI, making it evident that Google is focused on reducing friction in the user experience. By enabling Gemini to interpret and interact with on-screen content effectively, the company is paving the way for an AI assistant that is not just a respondent to queries but a tool that understands context and assists users in completing tasks seamlessly.
