X is streamlining the integration of AI assistants including Claude, Cursor, and Grok Build with the introduction of a new hosted Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. Announced on Monday by the platform owned by Elon Musk, this development allows AI tools to access the X API while using users’ own account permissions.
The MCP serves as a standardized framework that facilitates communication between AI models and various external tools. Previously, developers faced the task of creating their own MCP servers to enable AI applications like Claude or Cursor to interact with X. Now, with X providing the hosting service, users can easily authenticate using their existing X accounts.
This change is expected to significantly reduce the amount of time developers spend on integration, enabling them to focus on the core functionalities they wish to create. Developers have long been able to use X’s API for tasks such as searching for posts, analyzing trends, and engaging with user content. While the new hosted MCP does not introduce additional features, it simplifies the process of connecting AI applications with the data available on X, solidifying the platform’s role as a source of real-time information and analysis.
X’s initiative aligns it with several other tech companies that are also launching their own MCP servers. Notable examples include GitHub, Slack, Notion, Stripe, and Salesforce.
Earlier this year, X updated its API v2 to combat issues related to spam produced by AI, focusing in particular on automated replies. Additionally, X recently revised its API pricing structure, increasing the cost for publishing posts to $0.015 and for posting links to $0.20. These hikes were introduced as measures to deter misuse, making it increasingly expensive to engage in spamming activities on the platform.
Updated after publication, confirmation from X indicates that the MCP tool will not allow for “Write” access.
