AMD has announced the impressive performance capabilities of its EPYC 9005 Series Server CPUs, revealing an 82% increase in performance compared to Intel’s Xeon 6980P and noteworthy performance against the AWS Graviton5 in various stages of the agentic AI pipeline. The findings highlight that the EPYC 9005 Series offers a robust platform for critical processes such as orchestration, retrieval, database interaction, tool execution, and response handling within agentic AI environments. Furthermore, the newly released EPYC 9006 Series Server CPUs enhance performance even further, achieving a 174% improvement over Intel’s Xeon 6980P and demonstrating considerable advantages against AWS Graviton5. Together, these developments illustrate a significant advancement in capabilities, establishing the EPYC 9005 as a key player for current agentic AI solutions while the EPYC 9006 offers added performance for managing more extensive workloads and sophisticated workflows.

The evaluation encompassed multiple tiers of AI processing. For high-concurrency scenarios, the performance of the gateway and stream response tiers was monitored using the NGINX web server and WRK load generator. Other tiers involved testing with a range of established models and benchmarks, including TPCx-AI, ensuring rigorous analysis of efficiency and throughput.
The benchmarking also extended to ephemeral tools, which involved simulating short-lived command executions typical in agentic AI workflows. These tests used a range of common tools and libraries across several scenarios, assessing the execution capabilities of the systems under saturated conditions.
