Avi Schiffmann unveils Friend 2.0 AI wearable with voice feature to combat loneliness

Two years post-launch, Avi Schiffmann, the founder of Friend, has announced a significant update to the AI wearable originally designed to alleviate feelings of loneliness. The revamped device, referred to as Friend 2.0, now includes a built-in speaker enabling it to communicate with users in a distinct and engaging voice.

On Thursday, Schiffmann introduced this upgraded version via a tweet, highlighting the addition of vocal capabilities aimed at creating a more personalized interaction. Promotional content for the updated wearable depicts various scenarios in which users converse with their Friends, including a lady discussing her relationship experiences and a man sharing his filmmaking aspirations. In both cases, the AI companion provides supportive and affirmative responses.

The new model carries a price tag of $249, a significant increase from the original $99 launch price. While the voice feature adds an intriguing dimension, questions remain regarding the extent of its functionalities beyond simple conversation. In a recent post, Schiffmann described the intention behind Friend as offering companionship rather than acting as a traditional assistant or romantic partner.

This unconventional approach to marketing an AI-driven wearable raises eyebrows, particularly as Schiffmann boldly refers to the product as a potential confidant or even a deity-like presence. The marketing strategy echoes a previous subway advertisement campaign that sparked controversy and commentary when it was defaced in New York City, reflecting a societal pushback against replacing human interaction with technology.

Despite aspirations to redefine personal connectivity, wearable AI devices have generally struggled to gain widespread acceptance. A similar initiative from Humane Inc., which aimed to replace smartphones with an AI pin, ultimately failed, highlighting the challenges in this market segment.
