As the distinction between human-generated and AI-generated content becomes increasingly blurred, several tech companies are stepping up their efforts to improve transparency. Anthropic, for instance, recently announced updates to its Claude models, which will now automatically watermark all AI-generated text to comply with the new EU AI Act. This legislation mandates that AI products must clearly identify any generated or edited content, a commitment also shared by major companies like OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, Cohere, Meta, and Synthesia.
According to Anthropic, all models released after August 2 will include automatic watermarking for text and files, employing the C2PA open standard. The company has further plans to extend this feature to older models and develop a system that allows watermarks to persist when users copy and paste content. This application will span Anthropic’s entire product range, including Claude Code, Claude Cowork, and Claude Tag.
Anthropic is not alone in this push for transparency. Spotify recently introduced “AI Personas,” badges that signify when an artist does not represent a real person. This initiative applies to both artists who self-identify as machine-generated and to certain profiles deemed relevant. Moreover, Spotify will refrain from recommending these artists through its algorithms unless users specifically choose to follow them.
Similarly, the AI music platform Suno is adopting new watermarking and fingerprinting technologies as part of its commitment to transparency. It’s also revising its download policies to combat spam and fraud. Additionally, the newsletter distributor Substack has integrated the AI detection tool Pangram into its platform, enabling users to assess the AI content proportion in their blog posts.
This move towards transparency occurs amid studies indicating that many users struggle to distinguish between human-created and machine-generated work. Research from music streaming service Deezer revealed that 97% of listeners cannot tell the difference between authentic music and that produced by AI. Visual content also poses challenges; approximately 50% of readers from The Deep View could not identify AI-generated images in a recent quiz.
The emergence of watermarking and transparency efforts addresses significant concerns about authenticity in creative fields, affecting both consumers and creators alike. However, the effectiveness of these measures remains uncertain, as adversaries continually find ways to circumvent defenses. Furthermore, a larger issue arises regarding consumer attitudes; while many currently oppose AI-generated content that claims to be human-created, it remains to be seen whether this sentiment will persist as AI technologies evolve.
