Nvidia recently made headlines by announcing collaborations with Microsoft and several PC manufacturers to create AI-enabled PCs using its RTX Spark chip. On Wednesday, during an event in San Francisco coinciding with Tech Week, Microsoft unveiled the specifications and pricing for its latest offering, the Surface Laptop Ultra. The new laptop comes in two initial models, with the base model starting at $2,600 and a more advanced version priced from $3,700. With additional upgrades, including expanded memory and storage, costs can reach as high as $5,900, though the premium model is already sold out.
In addition to the Surface Laptop Ultra, Microsoft introduced a new workstation featuring the RTX Spark chip, known as the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box. This workstation starts at $6,000 and is pre-loaded with a suite of Microsoft development tools, including Visual Studio Code, GitHub Copilot CLI, Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), and PowerShell 7.
Both the Surface Laptop Ultra and the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box are designed for local AI model execution, thanks to their enhanced CPU and GPU configurations, alongside significant memory and cooling systems. They will run a newly updated version of Windows 11, which includes a feature called “Execution Containers,” facilitating the sandboxing of AI agents, a capability available to all Windows 11 users, as highlighted by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella during the launch.
Nadella stressed the importance of orchestrating AI models with contextual memory to enable meaningful applications. He indicated that this framework is intended not just for Microsoft’s applications but also as a foundation for third-party agent applications, reflecting the future direction of the Windows platform.
Targeting the developer community, Microsoft is promoting its Surface devices by offering a trade-in program that provides discounts of up to $1,000 for those who exchange a MacBook Pro. This strategy acknowledges the popularity of Apple devices among developers and AI enthusiasts, particularly in tech-heavy regions.
Additionally, the powerful graphics capabilities of these Surface PCs are also aimed at fulfilling content creation, video processing, and gaming needs, according to the company. On the same day, Dell also shared details about its Nvidia RTX Spark AI-powered device, the XPS 16 Creator Edition, which is currently available for preorder with a release scheduled for later in October, priced at $3,800.
