Tech Organization Donates Agent Skills Framework to Promote Open AI Development

In a significant move to further the development of artificial intelligence, a notable technology organization has today announced the donation of its open standard, Agent Skills, to the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF). Launched in December 2025, the Agent Skills framework has been integrated by over 70 platforms, including well-known names such as ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and VS Code.

Agent Skills operates as a repository that contains SKILL.md files, which guide AI agents in executing specific tasks or navigating particular domains. The innovation emerged from the insights gained while developing Claude Code, which excelled in general knowledge tasks but struggled with procedural complexities inherent to business environments. Following its debut in October 2025, the platform saw rapid adoption, resulting in thousands of skills being created and shared on GitHub, while loaders were also developed for tools like Codex, Cursor, and OpenCode. The initiative has witnessed the publication of one million skills and nearly 280 million installations to date.

The donation to the AAIF, which operates under the Linux Foundation and was co-founded alongside Block and OpenAI, aims to ensure that the Agent Skills framework remains open, community-driven, and neutral. The foundation previously received the Model Context Protocol (MCP), another contribution aimed at fostering collaboration and innovation in AI technology. This new association will provide a stable and neutral environment for the ongoing development of Agent Skills, allowing stakeholders to have a voice in its evolution.

As part of this transition, the organization is transferring the ownership of the Agent Skills name, logo, GitHub organization, and the domain agentskills.io. Users will still have the flexibility to use and contribute to the standard independently of the AAIF.

The stewardship of the Agent Skills framework will be taken on by engineers from leading tech companies, including Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI, with David Soria Parra and Mahesh Murag serving as the Lead Maintainers.

Looking ahead, a roadmap is being established to outline future version releases, introduce a formal proposal system, and offer security guidelines for those involved in skill creation and installation. In line with the ethos of transparency and community engagement, feedback will be actively sought on proposed changes, and interested parties can participate in discussions via the project’s Discord channel.

The organization expressed gratitude to the developers who have used Agent Skills from its inception and to the teams that integrated these skills into their products. For further details, the specification can be accessed at agentskills.io, and participation in discussions can be undertaken on GitHub.
