Shenzhen-based robotics company Dobot has unveiled the Rover X1, positioning it as the first truly intelligent home robot available for just 7,499 yuan, or about $1,053. Far from a simple novelty gadget that performs tricks on demand, this four-legged machine aims to serve as a versatile smart helper, capable of monitoring your living space, introducing children to programming basics, accompanying you on outdoor adventures, and even transporting everyday loads like shopping bags.
At the heart of the Rover X1 is a sophisticated dual-camera vision setup that enables all-around environmental awareness. The device continuously scans and interprets its surroundings in the moment, allowing it to make independent choices rather than just responding to direct inputs—a step ahead of many consumer bots that merely react to triggers. Its innovative wheel-and-leg hybrid mobility system empowers it to navigate minor inclines, traverse lawns, glide over polished wood surfaces, and manage payloads without faltering.
Dobot sees the Rover X1 as far more than plaything; it’s a flexible base for expansion. Users could attach a camera for self-operating video capture, deploy it for security rounds with live feeds to their smartphone, or configure it as an educational device. The platform accommodates simple to operate block-based coding alongside more advanced text scripting, offering a gentle introduction to robotics for young learners.
Beyond utility, the robot doubles as an interactive pet-like friend. It obeys spoken instructions, shadows its user throughout the home, glows with animated lights to convey moods, and totes lightweight objects such as backpacks or drinks. Amid increasing focus on dominated by stationary voice assistants and fixed AI devices, the Rover X1 stands out with its freedom of movement and customizable add-ons.
While full technical details and a dedicated landing page remain forthcoming, Dobot’s promise of robust construction paired with intuitive controls could transform how we think about robotic aides in domestic settings.
On a similar note, 1X Technologies, supported by OpenAI, recently introduced the Neo humanoid robot, priced at $20,000 and slated for delivery in 2026. It focuses on household chores through AI automation and remote support features.
