Microsoft has announced an update to the Photos app for Windows 11, which is now being deployed across all Insider channels. This update introduces an innovative feature designed for users with Copilot+ PCs: AI-driven auto-categorization of photos, which simplifies the task of organizing images for easier access.
The auto-categorization function utilizes artificial intelligence to automatically sort photo collections into distinct categories. These include screenshots, receipts, identity documents, and notes, enabling users to manage their photo libraries more effectively while saving time and minimizing clutter.
Key aspects of the auto-categorization feature include the smart grouping of images into specific folders based on their visual content, regardless of the language present in the documents. For instance, a passport from Hungary will still be classified as a “Passport” even if the text is not in English. This ensures that users can navigate their organized libraries efficiently, either through the left navigation pane or the search bar to quickly locate categorized images. Furthermore, users have the ability to manually adjust categories or provide feedback to enhance the system’s accuracy.
It’s important to note that the auto-categorization feature is currently limited to Copilot+ PCs, with only four categories available for sorting. Additionally, the update introduces improvements such as Super Resolution, which is now compatible with devices powered by Snapdragon, AMD, and Intel technologies and will prompt users to download the necessary model package.
Users are encouraged to update their app to version 2025.11090.25001.0 or later through the Microsoft Store. As this update is being rolled out gradually, availability may vary. Microsoft welcomes user feedback and encourages comments to be submitted via the Feedback Hub under Apps > Photos.
Ronnie Myers, Senior Product Manager, expressed enthusiasm for the update and its capabilities, inviting users to explore the new features and share their thoughts.
