40% OffQualcomm has officially introduced its latest generation system-on-chip (SoC), the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, which promises substantial advancements for upcoming Android flagship devices. Announced through a blog post last week, the naming of this new chip signifies a strategic leap forward for the company, skipping a generation to emphasize its groundbreaking features. Central to the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is the new third-generation Oryon CPU, designed for enhanced single and multi-core processing capabilities, along with a more powerful Hexagon neural processing unit (NPU) that concentrates on delivering personalized artificial intelligence (AI) experiences directly on devices.
The revamped CPU architecture consists of two prime cores operating at speeds of up to 4.6 GHz, paired with six performance cores clocking in at 3.62 GHz. Qualcomm asserts that this configuration results in a notable 35 percent increase in power efficiency for the CPU and contributes to an overall SoC efficiency improvement of 16 percent. The new Adreno GPU is also making waves, reporting up to a 23 percent boost in gaming performance while concurrently reducing power consumption by 20 percent.
Furthermore, the enhanced Hexagon NPU boasts a performance increase of 37 percent compared to its predecessor, alongside improved power efficiency. Qualcomm highlights that these features, in conjunction with the Snapdragon Sensing Hub, will facilitate a more tailored AI experience that evolves as users interact with their devices.
On the imaging front, the upgraded image signal processor (ISP) introduces support for the Advanced Professional Video (APV) codec and outlines a new “computational video pipeline” concept, allowing AI-driven enhancements to be applied to videos on a frame-by-frame basis. According to Qualcomm’s Alex Katouzian, this innovation paves the way for smarter video creation, incorporating context-aware autofocus, auto exposure, and auto white balance adjustments.
Equipped with the new X85 modem unveiled earlier this year, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 also boasts 50 percent lower gaming latency through the introduction of AI-enhanced Wi-Fi capabilities. Consumers can expect to see flagship devices using this cutting-edge technology from various well-known Android manufacturers in the near future, marking an exciting next chapter in mobile performance and user experience.
