Sony has rolled out new firmware updates via its Sound Connect mobile app, enhancing the functionality of its premium wireless headphones. The updates, applicable to the WF-1000XM5 earbuds and WH-1000XM6 headphones, introduce support for audio sharing and integrate Google’s Gemini Live conversational AI assistant.
A standout improvement is the inclusion of Audio Sharing with Fast Pair, using Bluetooth LE Audio’s Auracast technology. Users with compatible Android devices, such as select models from Google Pixel, Samsung Galaxy, and OnePlus, can now pair two sets of headphones to share audio with a friend or connect multiple listeners through a private broadcast using a QR code or Google Fast Pair. Google had announced this expansion of Android’s BLE Audio capabilities earlier this month.
In addition to audio sharing, the firmware updates enhance various system software security features and improve compatibility with digital assistants and head tracking when using a Bluetooth LE Audio connection. Following the update, users must re-pair their headphones with their devices to access these new functionalities.
The WF-1000XM5 earbuds will also see expanded integration with Google’s Find Hub tracking network, allowing users to locate each earbud individually. Notably, users can now disable Find Hub support without needing to access the earbuds’ charging case, a departure from previous requirements.
