Anthropic has teamed up with CodePath, the leading organization for computer science education at U.S. colleges, to overhaul its programming courses amid the rise of artificial intelligence in software engineering. The collaboration places Anthropics Claude AI model and its coding variant at the heart of CodePaths offerings, enabling over 20,000 students from community colleges, public universities, and historically Black colleges and universities to use cutting-edge AI tools in their studies.
More than 40 percent of CodePaths participants hail from households with annual incomes below $50,000, and the program seeks to equip them with rigorously tested curricula and connections to professional networks often limited to pupils at elite schools.
CodePath plans to embed Claude into key AI-focused classes, such as Basics of AI Engineering, Practical Uses of AI Engineering, and the AI Open-Source Project course, where learners will use Claude Code to develop applications and participate in actual open-source initiatives.
During the autumn of 2025, more than 100 CodePath enrollees tested Claude Code by contributing to projects including GitLab, Puter, and Dokploy. Participants described the effort as rewarding yet demanding. Laney Hood, a computer science student at Texas Tech University involved in CodePath, noted that Claude Code played a key role in her progress, particularly given her limited prior knowledge of languages like TypeScript and Node.js in the projects repository.
In January, Howard University unveiled a revamped Introduction to Artificial Intelligence class, created alongside CodePath and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. The updated syllabus incorporates Claude-supported coding practices, aligning with the demands of modern junior engineering positions. This marks the initial instance of CodePaths practical AI program receiving university credit.
With current technology, we can cover in two years material that once required four, said Michael Ellison, CodePaths co-founder and chief executive. Yet accelerating progress for select groups risks deepening disparities. By joining forces with Anthropic, we ensure our students at underrecognized schools start using Claude right away, leading to stronger results and a more inclusive approach to influencing the AI landscape.
The duo will also conduct joint public studies on how AI is transforming programming training and access to economic prospects, drawing insights from learners, instructors, and tech experts on effective strategies and shortcomings as AI alters skill-building and job entry in tech.
This initiative expands Anthropics efforts to deliver AI resources to teachers and students broadly. The company is working with the American Federation of Teachers to provide complimentary AI instruction to its 1.8 million members nationwide. In Iceland, Anthropic initiated one of the globals earliest nationwide AI learning trials with the Ministry of Education and Children, supplying Claude to educators countrywide. In Rwanda, it collaborates with the government and ALX to introduce a Claude-enhanced study aid for hundreds of thousands of African students and early-career individuals. Additionally, Anthropic endorsed the White Houses Pledge to Americas Youth: Investing in AI Education, vowing to broaden AI learning across the country via funding for cybersecurity training, the Presidential AI Challenge, and a no-cost AI syllabus for school staff.
Advanced tools reshaping software creation must reach beyond students at affluent universities. Through this alliance with CodePath, that goal becomes reality.
