    ChatGPT has introduced a new Computer History feature for users of its desktop app on macOS, which allows users to track and review their activity across various applications and websites. This feature is set to be off by default for ChatGPT Pro, Business, and Enterprise users. Pro users have the option to activate it, while Business and Enterprise workspace members need permission from an administrator to enable it. Notably, the feature is currently unavailable in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, or the United Kingdom.

    Computer History transforms user activities into a timeline of memories, allowing ChatGPT and Codex to reference past work. Users can ask questions about their recent activities, resume tasks seamlessly, and analyze workflows to improve efficiency through automation. The history logging begins only after the feature is enabled, and users can control which applications and websites contribute to this data, with options to view and pause the activity collection directly from the macOS menu bar.

    The new system is distinct from the previous Chronicle research preview, with improvements such as recording interactions without capturing screenshots or audio. Users will receive summaries of their actions, supported by information from various applications. For example, if a user asks what they were working on before a break, Computer History can seamlessly retrieve relevant data without needing to meticulously reconstruct their workflow.

    Moreover, the feature can guide users in identifying recurring tasks and suggest automation or skills based on patterns detected in their work. When a repetitive workflow is identified, users can ask Codex to create actionable skills or automations, optimizing their productivity.

    To implement Computer History, users need to navigate to the settings in the ChatGPT app, turn on the feature, and opt-in for Memories, which are essential for the memory context across various tasks. Settings allow for fine-tuning which apps and websites are included in the history tracking, ensuring privacy and data management capabilities.

    Users have control over the activity collection, including the ability to pause or stop the feature entirely. Activity data is temporarily stored locally on users’ Macs and is not captured through screen recording or audio input. Periodically, the feature aggregates activity data into text summaries, which are then stored for memory creation. Furthermore, data shared with OpenAI is processed briefly to create these memory files and discarded unless legal retention is required.

    To enable Computer History, users must follow a simple setup process involving navigating to the appropriate section in the app settings, reviewing privacy guidelines, and selecting which sources contribute to their history. The system emphasizes user autonomy, enabling individuals to opt-in, control app permissions, and manage their data responsibly.

    While Computer History enhances user interaction with ChatGPT, it does raise concerns regarding data sensitivity and prompt injection risks from third-party content. Users are encouraged to exercise caution and consider pausing the feature during sensitive tasks. Overall, this innovation aims to streamline productivity and create a personalized, contextual assistant experience.
