In an effort to improve user engagement, Claude is simplifying the process for developers to create connections with their applications, productivity tools, and data. The introduction of plugins serves as a primary method for third-party developers to extend the capabilities of the Claude AI platform. By developing a plugin and submitting it through the new directory submission portal, developers can see their creations listed in the Claude directory once approved.
Accessible to developers on paid plans, the directory submission portal offers two distinct submission methods: the first allows for a single MCP connector that points to a remote server, while the second enables the packaging of multiple MCP servers and skills into a plugin bundle, which can be submitted via a GitHub repository. Additionally, developers can incorporate LSPs, commands, hooks, and agents into their plugins within Claude Code.
The portal provides a streamlined experience, offering features that automatically validate submissions upon entry, allowing developers to identify and rectify issues early in the process. Users can track their plugin’s review status, access safety scan results, and receive feedback, all while maintaining control over when to make their plugins publicly available.
Once a plugin is launched, developers can use usage analytics to monitor installation rates by product surface and version, enabling them to make informed decisions regarding necessary updates and new features. The analytics also provide insights into how often their plugin’s listing is viewed and which search queries direct users to it, facilitating improved visibility and user acquisition.
Claude aligns with the latest Model Context Protocol specifications, known as MCP 2.0, which emphasizes a stateless core for improved plugin functionality. Developers can enhance user experiences further with two specific MCP extensions: MCP Apps, which allow for interactive user interfaces within the chat environment, and Enterprise Managed Auth, which provides seamless OAuth integration for enterprise clients.
