Claude Tag has been updated to improve its functionality within Slack, allowing it to engage more effectively with teams. When mentioned, Claude responds as before, but now it also proactively participates based on a broader understanding of ongoing discussions in a channel.
Previously, Claude could only assess individual messages independently, making it limited in its ability to act. The improved version now utilizes context from the entire conversation as well as its memory and user-given instructions to better evaluate when to interject.
This advancement has resulted in a roughly 30% improvement in Claude’s ability to decide the appropriateness of its responses. Notably, this update comes at no extra charge, and while the volume of context processed may increase usage, it does not count towards usage caps on any plans.
In the earlier system, a simplistic classifier determined Claude’s actions based on singular messages without accounting for the overall discussion. For instance, two engineers may discuss a bug without directly addressing Claude, leading it to conclude that it should remain inactive. However, when considering both messages together, it becomes evident that collaboration is needed.
With the new capabilities, Claude can now make one of four decisions based on the context of the channel: respond inline with brief answers, initiate a thread for in-depth discussions, route messages to ongoing tasks, or remain silent when unnecessary.
In practice, this means that if Claude identifies a relevant issue from two engineers working on a bug, it can create a thread for further discussion, involving both individuals without needing to be directly tagged.
This interconnected approach not only facilitates efficient communication but also ensures updates and relevant discussions remain within the correct context, improving tracking and resolution of issues.
To avoid becoming a nuisance, Claude is designed to be selective in its responses. It evaluates each channel to determine when its input would be meaningful, opting not to speak up if it lacks useful information. There are also provisions for users to fine-tune Claude’s behavior based on specific needs.
The update enhances response times, allowing Claude to acknowledge messages almost immediately, rather than experiencing a delayed response due to initialization lag. The actual work time remains unchanged, but the initial wait is eliminated.
