Google is undergoing significant leadership changes within its artificial intelligence division, with Demis Hassabis transitioning to pivotal roles. As announced by CEO Sundar Pichai, Hassabis will take on the positions of chair of Google DeepMind and chief scientist at Alphabet. He will also remain at the helm of Isomorphic Labs, a division dedicated to using AI in drug development.
Hassabis expressed his commitment to improving human health through AI, emphasizing the technology’s potential to address critical health challenges, including diseases like cancer. He stated his intent to work closely with Pichai on various global projects relating to artificial general intelligence (AGI) while continuing to support the leadership team at DeepMind.
In tandem with Hassabis’s new role, Koray Kavukcuoglu, previously DeepMind’s chief technology officer, has been promoted to senior vice president of DeepMind, where he will report directly to Pichai and also hold the title of Google’s chief AI architect.
Additionally, notable departures are occurring within the company, as Jeff Dean, Google’s chief scientist and one of the company’s earliest employees, is leaving alongside Google Fellow Sanjay Ghemawat. The duo plans to establish an AI-focused public benefit corporation named Discovery Loop, with Google serving as a founding investor.
According to its mission statement, Discovery Loop aims to create AI solutions that address significant challenges in machine learning, science, and engineering. The initiative seeks to accelerate scientific discovery and technological advancements to ultimately benefit humanity as a whole.
