Life science professionals now have access to the newly launched Life Sciences Verification Program (LSVP), which provides refined safeguards for using the Mythos, Opus, and Sonnet models in their work. The program, currently in beta, is designed primarily for teams and institutions, following the initial onboarding of several organizations through an early-access phase. Applications are now open to the wider life science community; interested parties can apply here. Over the coming months, the program aims to enhance its offerings and gradually extend access to individual users under Pro and Max plans.
LSVP is tailored to meet the needs of life science professionals across various domains, such as drug discovery, research biology, clinical development, and manufacturing. This flexibility is suited for diverse teams, ranging from academic laboratories to startups and major pharmaceutical companies.
To qualify for the program, applicants must undergo a verification process assessing their research credentials, security standards, and adherence to ethical research practices. Verified teams can apply for two types of grants under LSVP: “Standard Use” and “High-risk Use,” based on their specific access requirements. These grants can be used across various platforms, including Claude Science, Claude.ai, Claude Code, and their API.
The Standard Use grants are designed for the majority of life sciences activities, encompassing various research and development workflows. These grants can be allocated to entire teams and renewed annually, granting access to models with specialized classifications that are better suited for scientific tasks compared to the general models. The grants cover a wide range of applications, including basic science, supply chain, manufacturing, clinical development, regulatory affairs, and more.
For projects that are considered high-risk, which could present a greater potential for misuse, teams can apply for additional High-risk Use grants. These are project-specific, removing most safeguards typically in place and requiring semi-annual renewal. For instance, a researcher engaged in dual-use research might hold one Standard Use grant and one or more High-risk Use grants applicable to specific endeavors.
High-risk Use grants for Claude Opus 5 and Claude Sonnet 5 are currently available, while efforts are ongoing to collaborate with the US government to broaden availability for Claude Mythos; however, for now, only a limited number of entities will receive these grants following additional vetting.
The LSVP safeguards remain focused on preventing misuse, particularly concerning biological research where the line between beneficial work and harmful intent can be blurred. The program aims to counteract potential threats such as access compromise, insider threats, and misuse of agents, collaborating closely with enterprise Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) to establish usage monitoring aligned with intended application. This oversight allows verified organizations to define safe usage parameters while also being vigilant against unauthorized activities.
In terms of monitoring practices under the LSVP, the focus has shifted from real-time blocking of access to offline monitoring. This method facilitates identifying suspicious patterns across multiple requests and sessions while allowing legitimate research to proceed without interruption. Data associated with flagged activities will be retained for 30 days to support this monitoring, but stringent compartmentalization will ensure it’s not used for model training or accessed by Anthropic’s life sciences teams.
Organizations wishing to participate in the LSVP can submit an application here. Anticipating high interest, the program aims to enroll hundreds of organizations in its first week, with plans to expand support for the broader life sciences community soon. Currently, the LSVP is accessible through the first-party console for API usage and Claude for Enterprise and Team plans, although individual plans will be supported in future iterations.
As part of an initiative to enhance support for the life sciences sector, the LSVP is viewed as an important step in the collective effort to advance disease treatment and improve health outcomes.
