Rivian has announced a major overhaul of its software with the release of the 2026.31 update, marking the most significant transformation in its history. The company has developed RivianOS 2, a new AI-focused platform, designed to improve the user experience in all R1 vehicles on the road, encompassing both Generation 1 and Generation 2 models. This comprehensive update is expected to deliver improved speed, a more intuitive interface, and a distinctly Rivian feel to its users.
The introduction of RivianOS 2 means that it now powers the entire lineup of Rivian vehicles, including both R1 and R2 models, on a unified software stack. This integration ensures that all customers benefit from ongoing feature updates, shared user interface improvements, and vehicle-specific enhancements.
The updated software converges R1 models onto RivianOS 2, which standardizes the design language across all vehicles and provides an upgraded, easy to use experience. Significant features include a re-imagined user interface with dynamic controls that adapt based on the driving conditions, and a customizable media player layout. Additionally, the new Settings 2 has been completely rebuilt to offer context-aware controls and a universal search feature, streamlining on-the-go adjustments.
R1 and R2 vehicles now leverage advanced graphics capabilities through Unreal Engine 5, providing real-time 3D representations of the vehicle and its environment on the main display. Gen 1 vehicles continue to use Unreal Engine 4 to maintain responsive navigation. Furthermore, real-time navigation alerts, sourced from Google Maps, will keep drivers informed about police presence and speed traps, using data from local authorities and community contributions.
The update includes a dedicated weather application for Connect+ subscribers, offering real-time weather updates and forecasts, as well as mobile functionality that allows users to manage active trips directly from the Rivian app.
The unification of the software across Rivian’s lineup allows vehicles to access the Rivian Unified Intelligence, which strengthens the capabilities of select vehicle and mobile services. R2 and Generation 2 R1 models particularly benefit from enhanced computing power that supports low-latency processing.
Rivian emphasizes data control with RivianOS 2, giving users the ability to manage their data preferences, including hotword activation and location sharing settings, across all vehicle generations. The rollout of the 2026.31 over-the-air update has commenced for eligible R1 and R2 vehicles.
